  • A poem I recently discovered which I wrote my senior year of HS in 2007… Enjoy…

On an impoverished little farm there was a young woman by the name of Caroline
Due to lack of food, she was as thin as a bottle of wine
Her long, wavy, golden stare created a great stare
But she never knew how beautiful se was since she couldn’t afford a mirror in which to glare
She was the sweetest of sweet
From the top of her head all the way down to her feet
    Caroline was all alone,
Because her parents passed away before she was fully grown.
Despite her little possessions, she was content with her life
Raising her animals was all she knew, and never envisioned being someones wife.
One rainy day she was peering out a window in her small wooden shack
When she saw a sight that made her want to leave and never come back.
What Caroline saw before her eyes was a dashing young knight
Who was riding in a horse drawn carriage with an elegant lady that created a wonderful sight.
It was clear as day that they were in love
Just by the way he held onto her glove.
The maiden was so elegantly dressed despite the nasty weather,
It was no surprise that those two were together.
The gorgeous young couple was heading into the city,
Which only caused Caroline to feel inner pity.
Right then she decided that there must be a night for her too,
And she would go to great lengths to make that desire come true.
Never had she been so passionate
But the feelings she felt inside made it impossible for her to ration it.
    Caroline scurried around her house
Trying to find a somewhat presentable blouse.
If she was going into the city to find her man,
She certainly couldn’t do it looking so bland.
However this ended up being quite an issue,
Because the nicest thing she owned resembled a tissue.
Everything that once made her happy she was able to get rid of in a flash,
When she opened up the animals gate they ran off in a dash.
    Now that she was leaving
There would be no one left behind to do any grieving.
Caroline hopped on her horse with such a great force,
They sped off to the city, but first had to go through a forest which Lea hem terribly off course.
The horse tripped over a large tree root
And suddenly Caroline was flat on the ground starring at a witch’s boot.
She couldn’t stop shaking and was terribly frightened
But when she heard the witch’s soothing voice, her mood was instantly lightened.
The witch touched caroline’s cheek and softly said,
“dear child, why do you have a look of such dread?”
“well,” replied Caroline “I was so excited to find a knight in the city,
But I’m worried no man will think I’m pretty,
Or pay notice to me due to my attire.”
“nonsense! You could wear a dirty old rag and still get the attention of the sire.”
    “what do you mean?”
The witch handed Caroline a mirror, and when she gazed in she wa astonished to see a face prettier than any she had ever seen.
Caroline then spoke, ” I saw a young couple riding together today, and I want more than anything to have the love that they share. “
The witch then responded by saying, “that is something quite rare,
But I have something that can grant you your wish for a dress but it comes with a hitch.”
    “I’ll do anything!” cried caroline.
The witch went into her hut then reappeared with something that smelt divine.
“if you drink a spoonful of my stew
Miraculous things will happen to you.
The most gorgeous dress will fall over your skin,
Which will help you find your man to win.
If it takes longer than ten days to meet your match,
I’ll come find you and tell you the catch.”
Caroline agreed and drank up the witch’s stew,
Then magically she was in a dress of the most magnificent hue.
She thanked the old witch and merrily went on her way,
But the witch knew they would surely meet again on the tenth day.
Caroline scoured the city looking for a man that could give her the same spark she saw between the knight and his lady.
She was approached by a multitude of men, but unfortunately they were all rather shady.
    She was becoming so distressed
And started to care less about her beautiful dress.
    Caroline decided enough was enough
And threw out her gown with a great big huff.
She sat on a church’s steps crying
Thinking to herself, “why am I even trying?”
She abruptly stood up and started marching home,
But when she was walking over a small bridge she was overthrown.
Caroline landed in a muddy stream bed,
And when she peered up to the bridge she saw the most handsome head.
He was delivering vegetables into the city that his father grew on their farm,
He reassured her that he would do her no harm.
He was dressed as modestly as Caroline always used to be,
And there was no need to impress someone as lovely as he.
    There was an instant attraction,
Which was the best possible reaction.
There wasn’t a chance to savor,
Because the witch appeared and declared, “now it’s time to do me my favor!”
Caroline couldn’t believe it was time
And it was impossible to decline.
    “you waited too long,
    And your choice was wrong.
    You should have stayed simple,
Because no one could have resisted that dimple.
He would have loved you no matter what,
Now you just got yourself into quite a big rut.
I’m going to make him fall for me,
And you’ll see just how happy we will be.
    It could have been you,
    I only you knew-
    Trying to emulate
Will never give you a reason to celebrate.
I will give you no more harm,
If you just run back home to your little farm.
Remember what you’ve learned from this,
So maybe someday you’ll receive a kiss.”
Caroline couldn’t take any more pain,
So she ran back home through the pouring rain.
Her one love was taken away from her
And it was all such a blur.
If she never changed her way,
Today would have been her day.
Now Caroline must return to her empty home,
Where there are no longer pets that roam.
She can sit there and moan
    Since she’ll be forever alone.
And no one can her her agonizing cries,
Except for all the buzzing flies.
